This piece is an abstract encaustic painting (bees wax, damar, pigment) with metal leaf and interference pigments which create a shimmering effect on the 16 individual wood panels which are assembled to make a 40” square painting.
The painting varies from textured brush strokes to smooth and shiny painted and gilded surfaces. The raw wood is exposed in the areas where there is no paint.
Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to high temperatures, so they should not be hung in direct sunlight, or near a radiator, for example.
This piece comes ready to hang in a simple white edge frame.
