On HOLD: Lava Flow, 24" square encaustic painting

Shipping to United States: Free

This piece is a bold abstract encaustic painting (bees wax, damar, pigment) on a 24" square cradled wood panel. The pigment used to create the dark color is powdered graphite, which reads as a rich black.

This image was created using the pattern in the wood grain as inspiration. When transformed by wax, the lines become reminiscent of water ripples, or the slow movement of a cooling liquid, like hot wax or lava.

The painting is highly textured in thick brush strokes of pigment mixed with bee's wax and damar. The mixture is heated and painted while hot, and the paint hardens as it cools.

Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to high temperatures, so they should not be hung in a place which may get excessively hot, in direct sunlight, or near a radiator, for example.
