This piece is a bold abstract encaustic painting (bees wax, damar, pigment) measuring roughly 21”h x 16”w, painted on a collage of different shaped wood panels and paper.
The painting is highly textured in thick brush strokes of oil paint mixed with bee's wax and damar. The mixture is heated and painted while hot, and the paint hardens as it cools.
Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to temperatures over 180 degrees Fahrenheit , so they should not be hung in a place which may get excessively hot, ie. in direct sunlight, or near a radiator.
