This piece is a bold abstract encaustic painting (bees wax, damar, pigment) on 4 panels assembled to make a 20” square painting. The green paint
has been enhanced with metal foil in sections, which catches the light and displays the smooth molten nature of the wax.
This piece was inspired by a recent trip to Iceland, where the volcanic mountains and moss covered rocks capture the imagination.
The painting is textured in thick brush strokes of pigment mixed with bee's wax and damar resin. The areas without paint expose the raw pine surface of the boards.
Encaustic paint is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment, and damar, and is worked by heating and melting the materials. Encaustic paintings are very durable (examples remain from ancient Egypt) but they are susceptible to high temperatures, so they should not be hung in a place which may get excessively hot, in direct sunlight, or near a radiator, for example.
